Replica of Michelango’s Piéta

For the past month, St. John Cantius has been privileged to host a life-size replica of Michelangelo’s renowned Piéta. This statue was displayed in the newly renovated Chapel of the Dormition.

For many centuries there have been patrons of sacred art which have funded artists to create the finest art for use in the church to inspire, and elevate the minds of the faithful.  We would like to recognize one such artist, Steven Bishop of Vescovo Buonarroti Art and his family for undertaking a most unique apostolate. With permission of a Vatican Foundation, Mr. Bishop replicated of one of the most famous religious works of art the Piéta carved by the equally famous Michelangelo.

Then we imagined, What if we produced an edition of life-size exacting replicas of ’ La Pieta” in the highest quality, and distributed them all over the world? Wouldn’t millions of people - who would otherwise never travel to the Vatican—share our profound experience?

Soon, we found ourselves back in Rome, after having just secured the exclusive worldwide license from the Vatican Observatory Foundation to replicate “La Pieta.” Now, with painstaking attention to detail, our craftsmen have faithfully captured and expressed Michelangelo’s original spirit and intent.

For his Piéta, Michelangelo chose the most perfect piece of carrara marble with no veining.  The stark white was to portray the purity of both Jesus and Mary, but he took his subjects to a higher level.  The hands and face of Mary and the body of Jesus are highly polished giving them a depth and radiance which to our human eyes reveals the divine, the most holy, the most pure.

His contemporaries spoke about the man and his works with one word: used by many young people today: awesome. There has never been a more awesome artist than Michelangelo: awesome in the scope of his imagination and awesome in the awareness of the significance - the spiritual significance - of beauty. Beauty was to him divine; one of the ways in which God communicated Himself to humanity. The absolute perfection of his artistic execution is unsurpassed by any other artist that the world has ever known and explains why his work is so treasured.

The parish of St. John Cantius and the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius are dedicated to the promotion of restoring the sacred by using the beauty of our Catholic heritage in her sacred liturgical life and sacred arts.

If you wish to aid Mr. Steve Bishop and assist his apostolate in sending this replica of the Piéta to as many churches, hospitals, colleges throughout the world,  please contact him at with the information below:

“It would be impossible for any craftsman or sculptor, no matter how brilliant, ever to surpass the grace or design of this work, or try to cut and polish the marble with the skill that Michelangelo displayed. It is certainly a miracle that a formless block of stone could ever have reduced to perfection that nature is scarcely able to create in the flesh. Michelangelo put in to this work so much love and effort (something that he never did again), that he left his name written across the sash over Our Lady’s breast.”
