Latin Classes

St. John Cantius’ language classes begin again soon. If you have always wanted a deeper appreciation of our Church’s languages and heritage, now is your chance to begin or to continue your study of the language and history of the Church.

Classes start in June 2019, but the dates vary; please see below for details. All classes meet on Sundays, in the Library opposite the cafe San Giovanni in the Church basement.


NEW CLASS: LATIN AND THE MASS
Instructor: Rupert J. Ward

Classes start June 16, 2019 and end July 21, 2019

For those with no background in Latin and who may not be ready for a long term study of the language.  Classes will cover the basics of the Latin language with a focus on explaining, translating and pronouncing words and phrases found in the Mass. We will also read and translate some of the Latin inscriptions in the church.

The cost is $20 for the class. There is no textbook.

LATIN I: Beginner (Continued)
Instructor: Rupert J. Ward

Classes start June 2, 2019 and end July 21, 2019

For the beginner with some prior Latin study. Classes will cover conjugation of verbs, declension of nouns/adjectives and an introduction to reading and writing Latin. The textbook is Collins’ A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin. The class will begin with number 24 of the exercises in Unit 11 of the textbook. The cost is $50.00 for the class and $50.00 for the textbook.

Registration is on the first day of class. If you would like to join the class after June 2, please contact the instructor.


Future Classes:
We expect to offer the following classes beginning September 22, 2019:

  • Latin and the Mass - a repeat of the class above
  • Latin for complete beginners
  • Intermediate Latin
  • Translation and discussion of selcetions from “Reading Medieval Latin”
