Epistles and Gospels for Pulpit Use View larger image

We are happy to offer these new copies of Epistles and Gospels for Pulpit Use at the low price of $35.00 (USD), plus shipping and handling charges.

This soft-cover volume contains all the Epistle and Gospel readings in English in LARGE 16 point bold type print for Sundays and Feast Days. This book was originally printed in 1893 but has been updated to conform with the Missale Romanum 1962.

In the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass, (Missale Romanum 1962) the priest reads the Epistle and Gospel at the Altar in Latin, but before the Sermon/Homily the priest customarily re-reads the Epistle and Gospel in the vernacular for the benefit of the faithful. The translation provided here follows the traditional English translation from the Douay-Rheims (Challoner) edition, that has been revered as the English translation most faithful to the official Latin Vulgate edition of St. Jerome.

This item is a must for any priest celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass. Order your copy of the Epistles and Gospels for Pulpit Use at the low price of $20.00 (USD), plus shipping and handling charges.

Praesepio Nativity Ornaments - Set of Three View larger image

St. John Cantius Church in Chicago houses an elaborate 250 year-old Neapolitan “praesepio” from Rome. A presepio is the Italian version of the traditional Nativity Scene or Creche, only much larger. It includes not only the Nativity scene of the Christ Child with the Blessed Virgin, Joseph, shepherds and animals, but also a multitude of village scenes depicting Italian peasant life with villagers dressed in traditional folk costumes.

Originally, this presepio was to be donated to the Vatican but the donor chose rather to bequeath it to St. John Cantius where it is on permanent display in the church’s museum room. In order to generate funds to preserve and maintain our historic praesepio we have created these Praesepio Nativity Ornaments for your purchase. Now you can decorate your home at Christmas with these glass ornaments, painted in Poland.

This Christmas we are happy to offer three different Praesepio Nativity Ornaments. These collector items are available only for a limited time and so they make a wonderful collector’s item. Each year we expect to offer new Praesepio Nativity Ornaments with the various images from our 250 year-old Neapolitan “praesepio.” Purchase your collector-edition Praesepio Nativity Ornaments today!

How to Serve View larger image

The ever increasing interest in the Liturgical Traditions of the Church gives rise to the need for adequately trained altar servers and what better way to assist than to resurrect this classic altar boy manual! This famous handbook is an invaluable resource for all altar boys from beginning to advanced.

Thanks to the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius in Chicago, whose religious brothers serve the Traditional Latin Mass daily, we have been able to include multiple high quality digital images of the positions and actions of the servers in this newly typeset edition.

Though written for Instructors, this manual can also be used for home study, schools and sacristies. Dom Matthew Britt begins by offering specific instructions on common ceremonial actions, including how to make the proper bow, how to light the candles, and how to carry the Missal.

He also walks the servers step-by-step through Low Mass (with one or two servers), High Mass, Solemn High Masses, Nuptial and Requiem Masses, Vespers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Contains more than 24 precise diagrams showing the various actions and positions of Acolytes, Thurifer, Master of Ceremonies, Sub-Deacon, and Deacon. Includes servers responses for the 1962 Latin Mass. How to Serve is a brief and clear manual from 1934 that is simply the best book of its kind. It will once again become the standard reference for acolytes, handing on to young servers the disciplines necessary for reverent Catholic ceremonies.

Rev. Joseph W. Kavanagh, author of The Altar Boys Ceremonial observes that every altar boy

“should realize that...he is , after the priest, and in the absence of other priests or Sacred Ministers, the closest one in the whole church to our Divine Savior in the Blessed Sacrament. Occupying this very important position in his parish, an Altar Boy s conduct should be exemplary at all times and in all places.”

This will be the ONLY reprinted Altar Missal available in complete conformity with the final revisions made by the Holy See in 1962 to the traditional Roman Missal. So unlike the other “1962” missal being offered in the USA, our edition will include:

* ST. JOSEPH’S NAME IN THE CANON (added in November 1962),
* AD LIBITUM PREFACES (added in July 1962 and which includes the restored Advent preface),
* PRO ALIQUIBUS LOCIS section specifically arranged for the USA DIOCESES per the 1962 liturgical calendar (added in December 1962)
* Original imprimatur by Cardinal Francis Spellman.

See our promotion page for the Missale Romanum 1962
MissaleRomanum1962.com

The famed Benziger Brothers were one of America’s premier printers to the Apostolic See before they went bankrupt shortly after Vatican II. This faithful reprint of their altar missal is a testament to their labors which were not in vain and are of service to American Catholics in the 21st century as they were 40 years ago in the 20th!

* hard casing in red (or green) durable bonded leather (wears better than leather and requires no special care)
* ornate gold-embossing on both cover boards and spine
* thick cover boards and reinforced spine with decorative hubs (as shown above on the original)
* poly-grosgrain colored ribbons finished with bows (prevents fraying)
* strong midi-braid leads bridging ribbons to the spine (protects pages and life of ribbons)

The General Principles of Ceremonies of the Roman Rite View larger image

As its name would suggest, the defining element of the Roman Rite is romanitas, an ancient Latin term that refers to what it is to be Roman. As admirably described by Mr. Edmund Bishop in The Genius of the Roman Rite and further elaborated upon by Dom Ferdinand Cabrol in The Excellence of the Roman Mass, the Roman Rite is composed of simplicity and common sense, of sobriety and discipline, of gravity and dignity.

The General Principles of Ceremonies of the Roman Rite by Louis J. Tofari gives an excellent explanation of the rubrics of ceremonies for altar servers. For those Masters of Ceremonies who train servers, this is a wonderful resource and training tool for altar servers.

Jerome.

When celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass with incense, every priest will appreciate this set of altar cards which include the Offertory incense prayers.

Among the more difficult of the prayers of the Mass to memorize are the prayers used at the Offertory incensation. This unique set of altar cards, with large and clear print, makes it simple to execute the more difficult ceremonies of the Sung Mass in the Extraordinary Form. An invaluable resource for priests beginning to celebrate the Roman Mass according to the 1962 Missale Romanum.

These altar cards include all of the usual prayers, including the Aufer a nobis, Oramus te, Ab illo benedicaris, as well as the prayers used at the incensation at the Offertory.

Blessing of Incense

Celebration of the Mass View larger image

After having been out of print for over 30 years, this indispensable rubrical resource for the Extraordinary Form is now again available!

Author of several liturgically-related works, J.B. O’Connell is noted for his ability to clearly explain the complex ceremonial workings of the Roman Rite, particularly for the celebration of Mass by the priest.

The Celebration of Mass is valued by clergy and laity alike not only for its concise handling of the general rubrics, but also for its chapters that briefly describe the history of the development of the traditional Roman Mass, liturgical law, the proper understanding of the force of custom, the importance of the decisions made by the Sacred Congregation of Rites and the opinions of fellow rubricians.

O’Connell’s last revision made of The Celebration of Mass was printed in 1964 after a span of nearly 10 years from his last edition, making it one of the few rubrical books completely in conformity with the new code of rubrics implemented in 1960 that comprise the 1962 edition of the Missale Romanum.

Fully indexed and beautifully hardbound in dark green with gold embossing on the cover and spine.

“Whilst preparing the most recent edition of Adrian Fortescue’s Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described I added to the bibliography the 1964 edition of Canon J. B. O’Connell’s classic The Celebration of Mass noting that, in fact, this was the only book published in English at the time which conformed exactly to the 1962 editio typica of the Missale Romanum (which itself only appeared from the Vatican Press early in 1963 – printing and binding having been stopped and re-started in order to accommodate Bl. John XXIII’s insertion of St. Joseph into the Canon of the Mass). The 1962 edition of Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described was, therefore, published before the 1962 Missale Romanum and missed some rubrical modifications that appeared only in the editio typica.”

“But Canon O’Connell – undeterred, interestingly, by the approach of an ecumenical Council (on the Conciliar Liturgical Commission of which he was a peritus at the time) – proceeded with a thorough revision of his own comprehensive textbook on how to celebrate Mass. It received its imprimatur less than a month before the promulgation of Sacrosanctum concilium and appeared in print in the USA the following year whilst Fr. Bugnini was busy organising the infamous work of his Consilium.”

“Needless to say, this fourth edition of O’Connell’s book was quickly found to be redundant (though Canon O’Connell prepared a four page supplement which was printed and sold with the book listing many of the early changes made immediately following the Council) and many traditionalists have missed its importance because of its date.”

“Yet, for priests and seminarians learning how to celebrate the traditional rite of Mass, it is the basic textbook, more so, dare I say than even Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described. Ceremonies is certainly the basic manual for all involved in the celebration of the traditional rites, from sacristans to celebrants, but The Celebration of Mass is the textbook every seminarian and priest ought to have studied carefully in order to understand not only the ceremonial of the celebration of Mass, but the nature of the liturgy and the requirements of liturgical law, the rules occurrence and concurrence, the intricacies of the calendar, etc.”

“The book does have much to offer laity involved in the celebration of the traditional liturgy, most especially its “Synopsis of the Ceremonies of Solemn Mass” (Appendix A) which lays out the respective duties of the celebrant, deacon, subdeacon and MC for each part of the Mass in parallel columns. The synopsis does contain one error (spotted by my longstanding friend Mr. Michael Pearce of Sydney) in that its instruction that the subdeacon lower the paten, genuflect etc., should be placed during the Pater and not at the Per quem haec omnia.”

“It had long been my hope that O’Connell’s invaluable book would be reprinted and I am delighted to report that this has recently taken place in the USA. The worthy hardback reprint (alas, not a new edition) is being distributed by Preserving Christian Publications. Its availability will further enhance the intelligent and faithful celebration of the traditional Mass according to the typical edition of the 1962 Missale Romanum.”

Advanced Studies in Gregorian Chant View larger image

This masterful guide by Justine Ward, enormously rare, is now in print again for the first time since 1949.

It is her most advanced guide to understanding and singing Gregorian chant. It covers the management of dynamics, the singing of the Psalms including intonations and rules for adapting syllables to melodic formula, the three styles of chant, the treatment of accents, varieties of notation, forms of composition, the diagramming of chants, centonization, interpretation, chironomy and conducting, expression and accompaniment, as well as the origin, evolution, mutilation, and regeneration of the chant.

If you have only thought of Mrs. Ward in connection with children’s pedagogy, this book will amaze you. It is probably the most advanced guide to the practical singing and understanding of the details of Gregorian chant ever written. It certainly embodies the height of classical Solesmes styling. It is a must for anyone who aspires to mastery. The book is softcover, 208 pages.

This is the first edition of Justine Ward’s classic instructional text on Gregorian Chant. Appearing in 1923, it taught generations how to sing chant according to the methods and principles developed by Dom Andre Mocquereau at the Solesmes Monastery in France. It was Ward’s pedagogy and systemization of the method that brought the beautiful sound of this chant into the American Catholic life. All these years later, this book still holds up as one of the great chant method books ever published.

The rarest of the classic Ward book is this third year book, which is a continuation of the brilliant method pioneered by Justine Ward. This book introduces more complicated scales with chromatics, and explores polyphony. A unique aspect is the extensive quotation from the great polyphonic motets and Masses, by way of preparation for the fourth year. The volume also focuses heavily on intervals and independent vocal production, including pronunciation and style. It is substantially more advanced, but also an ideal preparation for chant and full participation in liturgical singing. This softcover volume is 208 pages. A real treasure from 1938, and nearly impossible to find.

Here is another classic Ward book: this time for second year students. As with the others, this book is designed to train the teacher to teach music according to the principles pioneered by Justine Ward. While the first book deals primarily with the major mode, this deals mainly with the natural and harmonic modes, exploring modes I and II in Gregorian chant. It includes a wealth of medieval folksongs along with a considerable repertoire of Gregorian chant. The charming Illustrations are by Frances Delehanty. Paperback, 225 pages.

Here is the classic that kicked off many generations of rigorous and brilliant music pedagogy for children, especially those in Catholic schools who were trained for singing chant. But its use is not limited to this: it provides a sound foundation for all music training, teaching theory, pitch, and rhythm with great attention to detail. Experts today are rediscovering the wisdom and power of the Ward Method, of which this is the very first book from 1920.

Translated from the French by Rev. Dom Laurence Shepherd
Monk of the English Benedictine Congregation
St. Mary’s Abbey, Stanbrook—June 14, 1885

An excerpt from Explanation of the Prayers and Ceremonies of Holy Mass on the incensing of the altar…

The Altar represents our Lord Jesus Christ. The Saints’ Relics which are there, remind us that the Saints are His members.  For, having assumed our human nature, He not only suffered His Passion, triumphed in His Resurrection, and entered into His glory by the Ascension, – but He, also, founded the Church upon earth, and this Church is His mystical Body; He is its Head, and the Saints are its members.  From this point of view, then, our Lord has not the fullness of His mystical Body without His Saints; and it is for this reason, that the Saints, who are reigning with Him in glory, are united with Him, in the Altar, which represents Him...The Priest, having finished the prayer, which he said bowing down, and his hands joined on the Altar, prepares for its Incensing...Holy Church has borrowed this ceremony from heaven itself; where St. John witnessed it.  In his Apocalypse, he saw an Angel, standing, with a golden censer, near the Altar, on which was the Lamb, with four-and-twenty elders around him. (Apoc. viii. 3.) He describes this Angel to us, as offering to God the prayers of the Saints, which are symbolised by the incense.

About the Author...

Dom Prosper Louis Pascal Guéranger (1805--1875) was a Benedictine priest and abbot of Solesmes. On July 11, 1833, the feast of St. Benedict, Dom Prosper Guéranger and five companions reopened the small monastery at Solesmes. It was the first monastery to be reopened in France after the Revolution. Abbot Guéranger encouraged the chant research and restoration work of the monks of Solesmes, and he worked tirelessly to restore monastic life to France, to purge the French Mass of its Gallican elements and thereby restore the Roman Liturgy to France.

Dom Guéranger was the author of The Liturgical Year, which covers every day of the Catholic Church’s Liturgical Cycle. It is a set of 15 volumes. Guéranger, the Abbot of Solesmes, restored the Priory of Solesmes. Guéranger was well regarded by Pope Pius IX, and was a proponent of the dogmas of papal infallibility and the Immaculate Conception. Dom Guéranger is credited with reviving the Benedictine Order in France, and revitalizing the Tridentine Latin Mass.

The Archconfraternity of Saint Stephen is a Guild formed with the object of sanctifying the server while serving the Mass and other sacred ceremonies. It was formed in March of 1905 in England by Father Hamilton MacDonald with the permission of Cardinal Bourne, then Archbishop of Westminster. Later of that same year, it was blessed by Saint Pius X. On December 04, 1906, the same Pope erected the guild to be an Archconfraternity with permission to establish other chapters of the Guild outside of the Diocese of Westminster within the British Isles. On February 19, 1934, Pope Pius XI allowed the Guild to spread throughout the entire British empire, and throughout the world.

Why is it important to have a Guild like the Archconfraternity? It helps us to come closer to the source of all graces, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. To be like the good angels led by Saint Michael, that is, to serve God. It develops a deeper contemplation on the Sacrifice of the Cross. The soul is nourished by frequent reception of Our Lord in Holy Communion. “To serve at the Altar… is next to the Priesthood the highest privilege which a layman can enjoy”(a quote from Cardinal Griffin’s Preface). It also develops devotion in the soul. It helps us to become more devout. The children (boys) develop good behavior at an early age. Their souls are fed with doctrines in the Catechism and nourished by serving the Mass. Their innocence are kept having the knowledge of what is right and wrong. “What you sow, you reap,” says the Lord. Therefore, if you sow in this kids the knowledge of God, that is through catechism and serving Mass, and they grow with it, expect good Catholics and good vocations in the future.

Who may join the Archconfraternity? “Membership is open to any boy or man, without any limit of age, who can serve Mass, and who has the desire to conform to the objectives of the Guild”(Handbook). To serve reverently, intelligently, regularly, and punctually are the basic objectives of the Guild. We are encouraging the boys and men alike, of the Parish, to join us to serve Our Lord and stay with Our Lady at the foot of the cross by serving the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass!
The Archconfraternity exists for the sanctification of the server and the salvation of his soul. Catholic organization like this helps build the society by promoting the sacramental value of the Holy Mass. It promotes the Mass, the source of all graces, the glory of the martyrs, our consolation here on Earth, and the foundation of the eternal truths.  The Holy Mass and the Archconfraternity go together, they are inseparable! And, of course, the prayers of Saint Stephen, the First Martyr, one of the First Seven Deacons (Acts) to shed blood for Our Lord Jesus Christ, are so efficacious before God. He would never allow a Catholic organization dedicated to his name go on extinction. The Archconfraternity, therefore being a witness to the tradition of Our Holy Mother the Church, will help us think of the great value of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, how to love the Mass, how to treasure it, and most of all, how to defend it at all times. God wills that the Mass and Guild should continue and thanks be to Him for having them here in Our Lady of Victories.

Learning the New Breviary View larger image

This is the guide published in 1962 for priests praying the Divine Office, according to the liturgical books of Blessed John XXIII.

The title word “new” is rather misleading today, as it actually refers to the new code of rubrics promulgated in July 1960 for the traditional Roman Breviary.

In this handy, concise and easy-to-read book, Fr. Hausmann leads the reader step by step through each of the 8 canonical hours, their contents, special particulars, and how they are said, all the while providing important tips on how to recite the Divine Office with a correct liturgical spirit.

An indispensable book for any Catholic who would like to become better acquainted with the traditional Roman Breviary, the Church’s liturgical treasure that in connection with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass forms the Church’s official daily prayer.

A great gift for seminarians, perfect also for any cleric or laic who might want to brush up on their breviary rubrics!

The Missa in Cantu & Missa Lecta Workbook provides the music and text that accompany the 2 CD Audio Tutorial.

Do you want to learn how to pray and sing the Traditional Latin Mass? Now you can learn with the help of Missa in Cantu & Missa Lecta Workbook. This provides the full text of the Ordo Missae and all of the essential Gregorian Chant for the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (1962 Missale Romanum).

The Missa in Cantu & Missa Lecta Workbook is a great gift to a priest or seminarian learning the Traditional Latin Mass. But it is also a useful aid to altar boys who are studying their parts. Choir members just beginning to sing Gregorian Chant Masses will appreciate the inclusion of the popular Missa de Angelis (Kyriale VIII) and Credo III. Missa in Cantu & Missa Lecta provides all of the prayers of the Ordo Missae for priests studying the Extraordinary Form, as well as the Gregorian Chant for the choir members learning to sing for the Traditional Latin Mass, and it also includes musical examples for the sacred ministers (i.e. Prophecy Tone, Epistle Tone, Gospel Tone), as sung by priests, deacons, and subdeacons.

The Canons Regular of St. John Cantius was founded in 1998 by Reverend C. Frank Phillips, C.R., with the blessing of Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago, as a Roman Catholic religious community of men dedicated to the restoration of the sacred in the context of parish ministry. Its mission is to help Catholics rediscover a profound sense of the sacred through solemn liturgies, devotions, sacred art, sacred music, as well as instruction in Church heritage, catechetics, and Catholic culture. This mission is reflected in the community’s motto Instaurare Sacra - To Restore the Sacred. To learn more about the Canons Regular of Saint John Cantius, visit us on the web at:

Missa in Cantu & Missa Lecta provides all of the prayers of the Ordo Missae for priests studying the Extraordinary Form, as well as recordings of the sung parts of the Mass (i.e. Prophecy Tone, Epistle Tone, Gospel Tone), as sung by priests, deacons, and subdeacons.

Today and during the Sacred Triduum, the Matins and Lauds of the Divine Office are often sung in a haunting service known as the Tenebrae service (“tenebrae” meaning “shadows”), which is basically a funeral service for Our Lord. During the Matins on Good Friday, one by one, the candles are extinguished in the Church, leaving the congregation in total darkness, and in a silence that is punctuated by the strepitus (a loud clatter intended to evoke the earthquake that was said to happen at the moment of death) meant to evoke the convulsion of nature at the death of Christ. It has also been described as the sound of the tomb door closing.

As the Traditional Tenebrae services are intimidating for smaller parishes (approximately 2 hours of singing), Monsignor Martin B. Hellriegel, created a modified Tenebrae Service for parishes. He maintains the entire structure of the service, but shortens the readings and psalms. In his Tenebrae services (approximately 45 minutes long), the Psalms are chanted in English according to simple Gregorian melodies and tones, yet some of the Latin and simple Greek Chants are provided (i.e. Christus Factus Est). See sample pages below.

Monsignor Martin B. Hellriegel (1890-1981) an Apostolic Protonotary, was one of the giants of the 20th century Liturgical Movement that Pope Pius X inspired. A native of Heppenheim, Germany, his most productive years were spent in America, where he was chaplain to the Most Precious Blood Sisters in O’Fallon, Missouri, then pastor of Holy Cross parish in St. Louis. Monsignor Hellrigel was influential in promoting liturgical reforms that Pope Pius XII had urged in Mediator Dei, his 1947 encyclical on the liturgy—in particular the restoration of the Easter Vigil and the participation of the congregation in the chants of the Mass.

During the Triduum, the Matins and Lauds readings come from the following day’s readings each night because the hours of Matins and Lauds were pushed back so that the public might better participate during these special three days (i.e., the Matins and Lauds readings heard at Spy Wednesday’s tenebrae service are those for Maundy Thursday, the readings for Maundy Thursday’s tenebrae “Cercis siliquastrum” service are from Good Friday, and Good Friday’s readings are from Holy Saturday’s Divine Office).

Legend says that the tree upon which Judas hanged himself was the “Cercis siliquastrum” -- a tree that is now known as the “Judas Tree.” It is a beautiful tree, native to the Mediterranean region, with brilliant deep pink flowers in the spring—flowers that are said to have blushed in shame after Judas’s suicide.

The Sunday Epistles and Gospels View larger image

The Sunday Epistles and Gospels are now in one beautiful volume!

Inspiration for priests and ordinary Mass-goers. Considered one of the finest Scripture scholars of his day, Msgr. Patrick Boylan was best known for his popular commentaries on the Sunday Epistles and Gospels, published in two volumes in 1941. For years they were heavily employed by priests as inspiration for preaching, and by laymen seeking to get more out of the readings at Mass. Now, they’re back in print in this handsome two-in-one volume, which presents:

* The Epistle and Gospel readings for every Sunday of the year
* Extensive ‘Notes’ on each reading (numbered verse-by-verse)
* “’Thoughts for Preaching’—at least three for every reading, sometimes as many as a dozen

The Sunday Epistles and Gospels are perfect for use with the 1962 Missale Romanum.

“While the work has chiefly in view the needs of preachers,’ writes Msgr. Boylan with priestly understatement, ‘it is hoped that others ... may find it spiritually helpful.” His book brims with unique features:

* The translation of each Epistle and Gospel is made directly from the Greek, to stimulate fresh insights and clarify precise meanings
* Line-by-line commentaries on the readings provide historical context, explain symbols and obscure references, resolve linguistic difficulties and point to other relevant passages in both Old and New Testaments.
* On disputed points of scholarship and interpretation, the one favored by official Catholic teaching is presented, with reference to Church documents and other definitive sources
* Instead of supplying ready-made sermons, the “Thoughts for preaching” draw out moral and spiritual lessons, highlight doctrinal significance, and suggest applications to everyday life and to timely issues
* For each Gospel reading: corresponding passages in other Gospels are listed

“Should be of the greatest service ... in studying the liturgical lessons for preaching. ... Not only is the utmost meaning extracted with the scholar’s feeling forfine shades of language, but the environment and the circumstances of each Gospel episode are made clear.”—The Tablet

‘Comments on the Sunday epistles and gospels in the way we would expect of a Scripture scholar—the way we could recommend to all preachers who are not content with mere moralizing. He clarifies the readings by translating them directly from the Greek into English, then by adding the most essential exegetical and historical notes to each .... Each set of comments then has its thoughts for preaching. Fortunately ...the comments, like the ‘thoughts,’ are helps to preachers who write their own sermons, not ready-made discourses for those who have surrendered their intellectual independence.”

The Roman Martyrology View larger image

The Roman Martyrology (in which are to be found the eulogies of the Saints and Blessed approved by the Sacred Congregation of Rites up to 1961) is an essential part of the Roman Liturgy, specifically during the Office of Prime, when its daily readings are chanted.

Another reason the martyrology is so interesting is that the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church liturgically recognizes MANY Saints, but the VAST majority of those are only recognized in The Martyrology. There is no Mass or commemoration for 90% (roughly estimating) of these heroes of the Faith. In other words, on any given day, the calendar for the Sanctoral cycle of the Missal may have one, two or no saints commemorated. But The Martyrology has 5 to 20 Saints commemorated every day.

And even The Martyrology is by no means a complete list of every saint (on average there are 30 saints that could be commemorated every day!) , but it is the complete collection of all the saints celebrated liturgically in the Roman Rite.

An entry may range from nothing more than a few words to a paragraph relating, for example, the significant acts of the Saint and his manner of martyrdom, if applicable. Another important thing to note is that The Roman Martyrology is not just a compilation of martyred saints, but of all the saints liturgically venerated by the Church.

Translated from the official Latin texts and adhering to the 1962 liturgical calendar, with The Roman Martyrology you can follow the annual liturgical life of the Church as she splendidly recounts the feasts of Our Lord and Lady, the martyrs and other members of the Church Triumphant.

Beneficial for all Catholics. An essential part of the daily office of Prime, fascinating daily reading, and the ultimate baby name book! Imprimatur 1962.

When celebrating the Traditional Latin Mass, three Altar Cards are placed on the Altar to assist the memory of the priest in saying the prayers of the Mass of All Ages. These prayers are printed on three cards and placed at the middle of the altar and on the Epistle and Gospel corners of the altar.

The Missal of Pope Pius V calls the large Altar Card the “Tabella Secretarum” (tit. xx), and it contains prayers such as the “Gloria in excelsis,” the “Credo in unum Deum,” as well as the prayers of the Offertory and Consecration. The Altar Card placed on the Gospel corner provides the text of the Last Gospel, which is recited at the end of Mass.  For the sake of symmetry, the last Altar Card is placed on the Epistle corner and provides the prayer “Deus qui humanae substantiae,” which the priest says as he blesses the water. It also gives the prayer for the “Lavabo,” said as the priest washes his hands.

This lovely set of Altar Cards is printed on heavy cardstock and can be beautifully framed to match any altar. We are happy to offer this set of three Altar cards at the very low price of $75.00 (USD), plus shipping and handling charges.

“A truly sumptuous edition of this classic work.” —Michael Davies

From the Preface of The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described

It is my pleasure to present this fourteenth edition of The Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described, a work originally written by the noted scholar, the Reverend Doctor Adrian Fortescue, and subsequently revised many times by Canon J.B. O’Connell… The permission for the reintroduction into public worship of the Roman Missal according to the typical edition of 1962 dates from the issuance of the Letter Quattuor abhinc annos of 3 October 1984… The use of this missal was further encouraged by His Holiness Pope John Paul II in his Apostolic Letter Ecclesia Dei of 2 July 1988. Particularly since then there has been a growing desire for the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in this venerable form of the Roman Rite on the part of a good number of the faithful… This development has rendered Dom Alcuin’s most recent revision of this manual on ceremonies a particularly felicitous one. May the publication of this new edition of a classic work contribute to ”that blended ‘harmony’ which the earthly Church raises up to Heaven under the impulse of the Holy Spirit” (Ecclesia Dei 5, a)!

—Dario Cardinal Castrillon Hoyos, President, Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei, 17 June 2003.

Stational Churches of Rome View larger image

This is a rare find! This 62 page booklet guides the faithful though the 40 days of Lent by taking them on a pilgrimage of the “stational churches” of Rome.

How did the Catholic Church in Rome observe Lent in the early centuries of the Church? It went on pilgrimage to the STATIONAL CHURCHES OF ROME.

The word “station” seems to come from the Latin “statio,” (i.e. “standing together") alluding to the ancient custom of the Catholic faithful gathering at a particular church with the Bishop for the celebration of the Holy Mass.

Before the end of the 1st century, the growth of the Catholic Church in Rome, Antioch, and Alexandria required multiple Eucharistic liturgies in different “domus Dei” (churches in private homes), but the Bishop’s Mass remained the official public liturgy.

When periods of persecution died down, official stations were designated for celebrating major feast days in various churches, so that as much of the Catholic faithful as possible might attend Mass with the Bishop.

After the Constantinian Peace, the privative “domus Dei” became the “tituli,” titular or parish churches, which numbered 25 by the 5th century. Eventually the Roman stations were reorganized and assigned to these titular churches, plus the new Constantinian basilicas. The number of stational churches gradually increased, especially under the liturgical influences of Jerusalem. Pope Leo III (795-816 A.D.) completed the list of the STATIONAL CHURCHES OF ROME with 94 stations on 92 days, including the 40 days of Lent and the octave of Easter.

The STATIONAL CHURCHES OF ROME provides the faithful a way to deepen their Lenten pilgrimage toward the day of Christ’s Resurrection on Easter, by developing devotion to the saints, by encouraging all to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father and by appreciating more profoundly the riches of the Sacred Scripture found in the Traditional Latin Mass (1962 Missale Romanum).

Whether you have never assisted at the ancient Roman Rite of Mass (1962 Missale Romanum) or have been doing so your whole life, this book has plenty to offer. The neophyte will be forever indebted to Providence for having put this book in his hands. As for the “veterans,” you’ll be left wishing you had read this book decades ago.

Are you fervent in your faith? Fr. Dunney will give you a greater depth of understanding. Are you lukewarm? Let Fr. Dunney pull you out of the spiritual doldrums. You don’t get anything out of Mass? - Then, read this book.

Our challenge is to understand the Mass, participate in it and live by its lessons. Fr. Dunney will help you on all counts. Intellectually, by offering an authoritative explanation of the Roman liturgy, explaining every part of the Mass carefully and in depth, highlighting the priest’s role, vestments, altar vessels, and symbols. The text of the Traditional Roman Liturgy is presented in both Latin and English along with unique and fascinating insights into the history of the liturgy and the Church.

Loaded with examples from Holy Scripture and the lives of the saints, Fr. Dunney applies the lessons of the Mass to help you grow in virtue and character for a fuller spiritual life. More importantly, he will lead you to a true participation in the Mass, which is nothing less than the union of the soul with Christ as He represents on the altar the Sacrifice of Calvary. Not accessible to the average Catholic, you say? Too mystical? Think again. Liturgical scholars and authorities are quoted throughout and 126 illustrations help to clarify important points. Each chapter ends with a series of review questions ideal for study, classes and homeschooling. The Mass is equally useful to the priest, seminarian, student, or layman.

Mass Explained To Children View larger image

Every conceivable element of the traditional Latin Mass unfolds before the eyes of children 8 to 15 in this masterpiece. The author: famed educator Maria Montessori. She employs abundant illustrations—36 in all— to explain:

  • The Meaning of the Mass
  • What Is Necessary for the Mass
  • Introduction to the Mass
  • The Mass of the Catechumens
  • The Mass of the Faithful

These chapter headings hint at the richness of detail in the best book on the Mass ever written for older children:

  • Famous Eucharistic miracles
  • History of the Mass
  • Why we fast for Communion
  • Liturgical colors have meaning
  • Meaning of the altar…altar cloths…crucifix and candles
  • Sacred vessels, bells, incense—all the items used at Mass explained
  • Why we do more than watch when Mass is under way
  • Meaning/origin of: Sign of the Cross, sacrifice, the priest’s whisperings
  • Meaning of key prayers (Credo, Kyrie, Gloria, Confiteor, etc.)
  • Why is so much silence required at Mass?
  • Explained: the priest’s motions (e.g., keeping thumb and forefinger together after the consecration)

We want our children to love the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Love proceeds from knowledge: you can only love what you know. The Catechism teaches us that our purpose in life is to know, love and serve God. It is only if you know God, that you can love Him. In The Mass Explained to Children, Maria Montessori gives young readers the knowledge from which a love for the Mass can grow.
—Laura Berquist, Homeschool Specialist

Maria Montessori was, in many ways, ahead of her time. Born in the town of Chiaravalle, in the province of Ancona, Italy, in 1870, she became the first female physician in Italy upon her graduation from medical school in 1896. Shortly afterwards, she was chosen to represent Italy at two different women’s conferences, in Berlin in 1896 and in London in 1900. Her desire to help children was so strong, however, that in 1906 she gave up both her university chair and her medical practice to work with a group of sixty young children of working parents in the San Lorenzo district of Rome. It was there that she founded the first Casa dei Bambini, or “Children’s House.”

The church choir wanting to sing the Gregorian Chant propers from the Liber Usualis will find the organ accompaniments of the Proprium de Tempore a great assistance in singing for the Tridentine Latin High Mass.

The Proprium de Tempore ("Proper of the Season") gives the organist the complete accompaniment for the Gregorian Chant propers (e.g., the Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Tract, Sequence, Offertory, Communion) for all Sundays and seasonal feast days.

First published in 1947, this organ accompaniment book has in modern notation all of the seasonal propers for the liturgical year. Throughout the entire book, the organ notation is underscored by the Latin words, each hyphenated under the appropriate note.

Handily included at the bottom of each page an artful translation of the text is provided in both English and French. Kyriale View larger image

The Gregorian Chant Kyriale is one of the greatest treasures of the vast musical heritage of Roman Catholics. Now back in print, the Organ Accompaniment to the Vatican Kyriale provides a lovely organ accompaniment book for the Gregorian Kyriale chants (e.g., the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Ite missa est).

This is a must-have for organists who play for the Tridentine Latin Mass!

First published in 1937, this organ accompaniment has in modern notation all of the standard Kyriale modes (I - XVIII), the Credo modes I-VI, and the Asperges (including one ad libitum) and Vidi aquam modes.
Featured at the back of the book can be handily found the various responses made during sung Mass (e.g., Dominus vobiscum, for the Preface, the Pater noster, etc.) in both solemn and ferial tone, and even the pontifical blessing as given when a bishop celebrates.

And for choirs that are not proficient enough yet to sing the propers of the Requiem Masses a cappelo, Bragers generously provided the accompaniments for their propers and Kyriale and the other funeral functions; i.e.: the entrance of the casket into the church (Subvenite), the in Exsequiis (Miserere) absolution ceremony (Libera me, responses and Benedictus), and the concluding antiphon, In Paradisum.

Of course what Gregorian Chant organ accompaniment manual is complete without supplying some of the ad libitum modes for the Kyriale? Bragers succeeds here too admirably with cantus ad libitum modes for I - XI of the Kyrie, I - III and more ambrosiano of the Gloria, I - III of the Sanctus and I & II of the Agnus Dei.

Throughout the entire book, the organ notation is underscored by the Latin words, hyphenated under each appropriate note (which assists with proper pronunciation of liturgical Latin too). Fully indexed, all notations and text are in printed in black ink on medium stock paper to ensure durability, while the spacious comb-binding gives the organist easy and quick access.

Proper of the Mass View larger image

This is an invaluable book for the members of the choir and schola singing the Traditional Latin Mass (1962 Missale Romanum). This was the primary ‘proper’ chant book for High Mass choir members in the United States from the 1930s until Vatican II. If the Liber Usualis is intimidating for the smaller or less experienced choir/schola, this is the answer!

The ‘Proper’ Of The Mass is set to very basic Gregorian Psalm-tones with organ accompaniment. These ‘proper’ chants for the entire year are beautiful yet simple enough for most choir members to sing with limited practice. Includes complete daily, seasonal, ember-day, ferial, common Masses, etc. Table of Contents.

Also includes Preface, Instructions from the author to the organist & choir members, Preface, rules for liturgical pronunciation of Latin, notes on when to sing the various chants of the ‘proper’, and rules for good vocal production.

Rosary means a crown of roses, a spiritual bouquet given to the Blessed Mother of God. The Rosary has been called the preparation for contemplation and the prayer of saints. While the hands and lips are occupied with the prayers, the mind meditates on the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption represented by the decades.

Meditation is the form of prayer by which the one who prays uses the mind and imagination to consider a truth and uses the will to love it and form resolutions to live it. In this way the heart, mind, and soul of the Christian is formed according to the Gospel examples of the Savior and His First Disciple, His Mother.

  • “Among all the devotions approved by the Church none has been so favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary” (Pope Pius IX).
  • “Say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world” (Our Lady of Fátima).
  • “There is no surer means of calling down God’s blessings upon the family . . . than the daily recitation of the Rosary” (Pope Pius XII).
  • “We do not hesitate to affirm again publicly that we put great confidence in the Holy Rosary for the healing of evils of our times” (Pope Pius XII).
  • “No one can live continually in sin and continue to say the Rosary: either they will give up sin or they will give up the Rosary” (Bishop Hugh Doyle).
  • “The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world” (Pope John XXIII).
  • “The Rosary is the compendium of the entire Gospel” (Pope Paul VI quoting Pope Pius XII).
  • “My impression is that the Rosary is of the greatest value not only according to the words of Our Lady at Fátima, but according to the effects of the Rosary one sees throughout history. My impression is that Our Lady wanted to give ordinary people, who might not know how to pray, this simple method of getting closer to God” (Sister Lucia, one of the seers of Fátima).
  • St. Louis de Montfort warns us against both the ignorant and scholars who regard the Rosary as something of little importance..."the Rosary is a priceless treasure inspired by God.”

Square Notes Workbook in Gregorian Chant View larger image

Grouped into five sections (Symbols, Simple Neums, Rhythm, Special Neums, and Modes), Square Notes clarifies the basics of Gregorian chant.

Every fundamental of chant is covered with a short explanation followed by written exercises to be done in the workbook, fill in the blank, identifying notes, writing notation, drawing rhythmic waves, and much more.

This book has been prepared to fill a great need in our Catholic schools…a thorough and accurate presentation of the fundamentals of Gregorian Chant. However, the theoretical material presented here should never be considered as an end in itself. It is intended only as a gateway to a fuller participation in the Liturgy of Holy Mother Church through a more beautiful rendition of Her official music.

Although this workbook was primarily intended for our elementary schools, it need not be restricted to that area. Choirs, classes in music education, or even novitiates may find it helpful as an introduction to Gregorian Chant.

It is sincerely hoped that both teachers and students will find this book as helpful as it is intended to be and that because of it, they will come to love and appreciate a truly beautiful form of music.
(From the Preface)

Arsis, Punctum, Virga, Ictus, Chironomy, Undulation, Climacus, Torculus, Bar Lines, Scandicus, Modes, Quilisma…if it’s Greek to you, here’s a good place to start! Need a little refresher? Pick up Square Notes!

This is the most popular booklet ever for learning the Traditional Latin Mass (1962 Missale Romanum).  One does not have to be an expert in the rubrics to understand Father Schmitz’s lessons in learning the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. While his text is straightforward it is also accurate and succinct.

This newly typeset edition of Fr. Schmitz’s guide for priests and seminarians in learning the Tridentine Latin Mass features red ink for rubrics, blue ink for footnotes, and black ink for the text of the Mass and for other instructions.

Dedicated with profound admiration and gratitude to the Most Reverand John M. McNarama, D.D., Auxilary bishop of Washington, who rejoices that he has ordained more than two thousand men to stand at the altar of God.

Know your Mass View larger image

Know Your Mass was originally published by the Catechetical Guild in 1954 with the Imprimatur of Francis Cardinal Spellman. This charming little booklet is made for children in the style of a “comic” book unlike any other because Know Your Mass is a detailed, fully illustrated, step-by-step explanation of the Traditional Latin Mass. Now, for the first time, it is reprinted full color!

The book presents the theology of the Traditional Latin Mass in a manner easily understood by children and yet is incredibly interesting and informative for adults as well. Many priests and seminarians have found this useful for learning the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Missale Romanum 1962).

Know Your Mass is an excellent catechetical tool for all ages. All parts of the Holy Sacrifice are covered, from the Prayers at the Foot of the Altar, the traditional design of the sanctuary, sacred vessels and vestments, liturgical actions, the sanctuary, and some liturgical history as well. This is a fine gift for First Holy Communion, a superb choice for converts and for anyone learning about the Tridentine Mass.

Anyone who delves into this book cannot come away ignorant of the true significance of the liturgical representation of Our Lord’s Sacrifice on Calvary that is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

A Handbook for the Sacristan View larger image

The most popular pre-Vatican II sacristy manual. We searched high and low for a good sacristy manual. Nothing could be clearer and simpler than the scheme of this 1932 book: it encapsulates every possibility in the ceremony of the Traditional Latin Mass that occurs in the course of the year. And it does it in succinct manner and with precision.

The reader is told what he must do to prepare for the ceremony: what vestments to lay out, how to lay them out, how to prepare the altar, and what special features each particular ceremony contains. Fr. William A. O’Brien, a pastor, teacher, and liturgy expert defines each term and provides easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams.

This is a complete guide to traditional Catholic ceremony:

  • The eight possible colors for vestments and when to use them
  • Where to find which feast should be celebrated on each day, and what color the vestments and altar decorations should be
  • The one ornament that every altar must feature
  • Vestments: illustrations and definitions of everything from the burse and maniple to the dalmatic and chalice veil
  • How to keep the embroidery on vestments from cracking Sacred vestments
  • Which vestments must be blessed before being used in the service of the Church
  • How to care for altar linens: purificators, palls, corporals, amices, finger towels
  • From Ash Wednesday to Easter: what the deacon and subdeacon wear instead of dalmatics
  • The Paschal Candle: do you know when it is next used after it is stored away on Ascension Thursday?
  • What you can use if you don’t have candles of unbleached wax for the Tenebrae service?
  • Seven things you need when Holy Communion is distributed outside of Mass
  • The use of the oil case, and the meaning of its three separate compartments labeled O. C., S. C., and O. I.
  • The proper color of the veil that should cover the ciborium
  • What you must do, if the priest asks you to prepare the chalice
  • Five steps Arrangement of vestments in the sacristy: celebrant, deacon, and subdeacon How to prepare the sacristy, the altar, and the credence table for a sung Mass (Missa Cantata)
  • Ten steps to prepare the altar for Benediction and Exposition

Calvary and the Mass View larger image

“Picture then the High Priest Christ leaving the sacristy of heaven for the altar of Calvary. He has already put on the vestment of our human nature, the maniple of our suffering, the stole of priesthood, the chasuble of the Cross. Calvary is His cathedral; the rock of Calvary is the Altar Stone; the sun turning to red is His sanctuary lamp; Mary and John are the living side altars; the host is His body; the wine is His blood. He is upright as Priest, yet He is prostate as Victim. His Mass is about to begin.”

Fulton John Sheen (May 8, 1895—December 9, 1979) was an American archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church. He was Bishop of Rochester and American television’s first preacher of note, hosting Life Is Worth Living in the early 1950s, first on the old DuMont Television Network and later on ABC, from 1951 to 1957. He later hosted the “Bishop Sheen Program” in syndication with a virtually identical format from 1961 to 1968; these later programs, many of which were taped in color, are still frequently rebroadcast today.

Sheen was born in El Paso, Illinois, the oldest of four sons of a farmer. Though he was known as Fulton, his mother’s maiden name, he was baptized Peter John Sheen. As an infant, Sheen contracted tuberculosis. After the family moved to nearby Peoria, Illinois, Sheen’s first role in the Catholic Church was as an altar boy at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Excerpts from Calvary and the Mass...

The Communion
“I thirst.” - John 19:28.

Our Blessed Lord reaches the communion of His Mass when out from the depths of the Sacred Heart there wells the cry: “I thirst.” This was certainly not a thirst for water, for the earth is His and the fullness thereof; it was not a thirst for any of the refreshing droughts of earth, for He calmed the seas with doors when they burst forth in their fury. When they offered Him a drink, He took it not. It was another kind of thirst which tortured Him. He was thirsty for the souls and hearts of men.
The Last Gospel

“Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” - Luke 23:46.

It is a beautiful paradox that the Last Gospel of the Mass takes us back to the beginning, for it opens with the words “In the beginning.” And such is life: the last of this life is the beginning of the next. Fittingly indeed, then, that the Last Word of our Lord was His Last Gospel: “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” Like the Last Gospel of the Mass, it too takes Him back to the beginning, for He now goes back to the Father whence He came. He has completed His work. He began His Mass with the word: “Father.” And He ends it with the same word.

About the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart

The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart means recognition of the loving Kingship of the Heart of Jesus in the Christian family. The family shows this recognition by giving the image of the Sacred Heart a place of honor in the home and dedicating itself to Him by an act of consecration. In this way the family is brought under the benign influence of the Divine Heart, which asserts itself in all the events of family life.

The Enthronement is like recognition of the living presence of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Christian home, where His Divine Heart, as King of Love, is the Center, attracting all the members of the family. It is more than a mere veneration of the image of the Sacred Heart or a transient consecration. It is a “way of life,” a permanent state of devotedness and love, full of grace and joy.

A Christian family without love for Christ, without the protection of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is in danger of being corrupted by the spirit of worldliness. The imperative condition, then, for extending the reign of Christ over mankind is the restoration of families in Christ.

Biretta View larger image

The Biretta is the square cap with three ridges or peaks on its upper surface, worn by clerics of all grades from cardinals downwards.

The use of the Biretta is prescribed by the rubrics both at Mass and in other ecclesiastical functions. Cardinals wear red birettas, bishops violet, but priests, deacons, subdeacons and seminarians wear black birettas. It may be said in general that the biretta is worn in processions and when seated.

The liturgical biretta has three peaks, and the ‘peak-less’ corner should be worn on the left side of the head. However, in some religious orders or in some dioceses, the biretta may have four peaks.

The Cantius Webstore is happy to offer you our three-cornered collapsible Biretta for the low price of $75.00 each. This makes a wonderful gift for your favorite priest or seminarian. Get your Biretta today!

We currently offer four sizes (metric): 58, 59, 60, 61.
