About the Musical Artists
Henry Criz has made successful concert tours in the United States and Europe. Under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State, he performed in numerous Eastern European and Middle Eastern cities. He made his solo debut at the age of 11 at a youth concert of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and has appeared as soloist with the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra and the Washington National Orchestra at Wolf Trap. Henry has won the Dasch, Lyon & Healy, and McCormick Foundation Awards, as well as the National federation of Music Clubs Award, which led to a performance at The White House. Broadcasts have included Radio Telefis Eireann (RTE) and the Swiss Radio Broadcasting System. He was Concertmaster of the orchestra of the Lyric Opera of Chicago for nine years, and has been Concertmaster for, and regularly appeared as soloist with, a number of other local orchestras. He completed the Bachelor's and Master's degrees with honors at Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University, studying under Morris Gomberg, and was on the faculty there. Currently, he is Director and teacher at his Moraine Music Academy and is a registered financial advisor with Patrick Mauro Investment Advisor, Inc.
Neil Posner has a long musical history. His father and grandfather were pianists, and he started piano lessons with his father at the age of 5, moving to lessons with professional teachers at age 6. After completing undergraduate studies at New York University, he worked several years as a music director and rehearsal pianist on and off-Broadway, and classical (opera, choral and instrumental) accompanist, performing in all the major New York concert venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Town Hall. He moved to Los Angeles to work as a studio pianist while continuing to play in the pit orchestras for many Broadway shows that came to Los Angeles, including A Chorus Line, Wonderful Town and Barnum, as well as touring with such legendary artists as Peggy Lee and Andy Williams. He continued his work as a classical accompanist, performing with such artists as Jean-Pierre Rampal and David Shostac. When he tired of the touring musician's life, he launched a recording studio that specialized in post-production services, which allowed him to return to his first love: classical accompanying and chamber music. After taking business courses at UCLA to help him manage his growing recording-studio business, he decided to change careers and received his law degree, magna cum laude from Marquette University. Neil practices at the law firm of Much Shelist PC in Chicago, where he is the Chair of the Policyholder's Insurance Coverage Practice Group. Active in philanthropy, he also is Chair of the Board of Directors of Jewish Child & Family Services/JCFS Chicago. And he continues to perform the music that he loves.

Cantate Domino Choir
- Details:
- Mar. 22, 7:30 pm - Stations of the Cross

Join us for a powerful Lenten reflection on Friday, March 22nd at 7:30 pm—the traditional Stations of the Cross accompanied by Pergolesi's famous "Stabat Mater.”
The Cantate Domino Choir will perform one of the most celebrated works of the composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, his “Stabat Mater”.
The “Stabat Mater” is not only regarded as one of Pergolesi's greatest, but it also was the last he wrote before his death in 1736 at only 26.
This is one of the most beautifully powerful ways to reflect and pray the Stations of the Cross.
This is free, and all are welcome.
The Grinnell Singers in Concert
- Details:
- Mar. 19, 8:00 pm - Free-will donation
The Grinnell Singers are a group of people who are highly diverse in terms of their backgrounds, interests, and talents, but who are united in their love of singing and their dedication to the choral art. They perform music from a wide variety of traditions and locales from Brahms to Bluegrass, from Renaissance England to twenty-first century New York. They work hard to craft the very best musical performances together, and as they pursue these high ideals, they are committed to fostering an environment that is welcoming and supportive for each and every member. In addition to their musical work, the ensemble regularly contributes to the community in the form of volunteer projects.

Each year, the Grinnell Singers complete a concert tour during the first week of spring recess. In past years, they have completed tours to Finland, Estonia, Russia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Their 2012 tour took them into Canada, with concerts in Chicago, Ann Arbor, Toronto, and Montreal, culminating in a concert at Boston University, and in 2013, they travelled to California, with concerts all along the coast, from San Francisco to San Diego.

This year, we have another collaboration planned with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra from the Twin Cities. Together with this professional period-instrument ensemble, we will be presenting three performances of Handels Dixit Dominus and J. S. Bachs Mass in A Major in Grinnell and in St. Paul and Rochester Minnesota. One of our most illustrious musical alumni, Thomas Meglioranza 92, will also be joining us as baritone soloist for these concerts. This is the third time that the Grinnell Singers have teamed up with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra. Our 2017 concerts, under the direction of guest conductor Simon Carrington, were hailed as superbly nimble and confident by the Rochester Post-Bulletin. Our first collaboration, on Handels Esther was also a joyful and richly rewarding occasion. We are pleased to have this ongoing relationship with this fine ensemble, and their musical director, Jacques Ogg.
Following our Twin-Cities concerts with the Lyra Baroque Orchestra during the first two days of spring break, we will continue on the road, performing concerts on our own on our spring-break tour.
Talliss forty-voice motet, Spem in alium has been a signature piece for the Grinnell Singers over the years. It is a great adventure mastering this piece, in which each individual really has to sing with complete independence. There is so much to explore in this rich work of art. One of the most enjoyable things weve done is to sing impromptu performances of Spem in alium in resonant acoustics such as state capitol rotundas while on tour. As part of this project, we also plan to create a virtual choir version of our performance.
John Rommereim
John Rommereim is Blanche Johnson Professor of Music at Grinnell College, where he conducts the Grinnell Singers and the Grinnell Oratorio Society and teaches composition. His choral works have been performed by choral ensembles across the U.S., including Magnum Chorum, the Princeton Singers, VocalEssence, Voces Novae, Roomful of Teeth, the Norfolk Festival Choir, and The Rose Ensemble, for whom he served as 2008-09 composer-in-residence. The New York Times praised the richly expressive character of his work for voice and piano, Into the Still Hollow (2006). He has collaborated on two theatre works with his colleague at Grinnell, Craig Quintero: Rheingold (2014), and The First Time I Walked on the Moon (2018), which was performed at the Taiwan International Theatre Festival, the Tainan Festival of the Arts, and the BeSeTo Festival in Kwangju, South Korea. His works written in collaboration with flutist Claudia Anderson have been performed at the National Flute Association convention, and internationally by the ZAWA flute duet.

Rommereims choral/orchestral work Utopia (2000) was premiered with the Prague Radio Orchestra and the Grinnell Singers, and his choral cycle Convivencia (2006), a six-movement work for choir, string quartet, and harp, based on ancient love poetry from Jewish, Islamic, and Christian traditions, was premiered by Voces Novae, of Bloomington, Indiana, at a special event co-sponsored by Jewish, Muslim, and Christian organizations. He is the recipient of commissions and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Composers Forum, the Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Iowa Composers Forum, and the Iowa Arts Council.
He has conducted the Grinnell Singers on concert tours across the U.S., and in Estonia, Finland, Russia, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey. The ensemble has been invited to perform at two regional ACDA conventions. The Grinnell Singers have recorded Rachmaninovs All-Night Vigil, as well as a CD with Jonathan Doves The Passing of the Year as its centerpiece. His translation of Pavel Chesnokovs seminal treatise, The Choir and How to Direct It is published by Musica Russica.

Tickets: $15 or $10 Seniors and Students
Tickets will be available Monday, February 18th!
The nationally-acclaimed live theater production based on the life of Father Augustus Tolton, Americas first Black priest, is coming to Chicago. Tolton: From Slave to Priesttells the moving story of Chicago's first possible saint. It is an inspiring drama that brings to life the holiness and forgiveness so desperately needed in today's world.
Produced by the award-winning Leonardo Defillippis of St. Luke Productions, Tolton: From Slave to Priest, has been seen in cities across America.
I found Tolton to be a wonderful statement of faith and perseverance. The script is excellent, laced with the right passages from the scriptures to keep it grounded in Tolton's faith.
The performance is so rich in telling this compelling story. People were genuinely movedthey had never seen anything like it.
Bishop Joseph N. Perry
Tickets will be available soon!

Father Augustus Tolton was the first identified black American ordained to the priesthood in the United States. He was born into slavery and escaped to freedom with his mother and siblings under harrowing circumstances. Throughout his life he displayed a great devotion to the Lord and the Catholic faith despite facing racism within the Church at nearly every turn. Still, he felt and preached that the Catholic Church's teaching that all people are children of God regardless of race made it the true church for African Americans in the United States following the Civil War.

These are the words said by the priest as he imposes ashes in the form of a cross on the head of each person who comes forth. The ashes are a visible sign to us of our mortality, our need for always seeking a conversion of heart and the need to do acts of penance for ourselves and the world. The ashes are a Biblical symbol of repentance, sorrow, and humility.
There are many cases in the Scriptures of wearing ashes as a sign of penitence, often while wearing sackcloth. In 2 Samuel 13:19, Tamar puts on ashes and tears her clothes as a sign of sadness and repentance. In Esther 4:1-3, after learning of the king’s decree to kill all Jews, Mordecai tears his garments, and puts on sackcloth and ashes. His fellow Jews do the same thing, as well as beginning to fast. The prophet Jeremiah (6:26) urges his readers to “gird on sackcloth and roll in ashes.”
Ashes are an outward expression of our need to begin again.
