Language Classes

Language classes begin September 30, 2018
It is time to register for St. John Cantius’ fall classes. If you have always wanted a deeper appreciation of our Church’s languages and heritage, now is your chance to begin or to continue your study of the language and history of the Church.

Classes start September 30, 2018, and end January 6, 2019. There are no classes on December 23, 2018. All classes meet on Sundays, in the Canonry at 1025 W. Fry St., Chicago, IL. Enter the building from the south door between the Canonry and the Church.

Latin Classes


The cost is $50.00 for the class and $50.00 for the textbook.

LATIN I: Beginner
Instructor: Rupert J. Ward

For the beginner with no prior Latin study. Classes will cover conjugation of verbs, declension of nouns/adjectives and an introduction to reading and writing Latin. The textbook is Collin’s A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin. LATIN II: Beginner (Continued)

For the beginner with some previous Latin study. Classes will cover conjugation of verbs, declension of nouns/adjectives and reading and writing Latin. The textbook is Collin’s A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin. The class will begin with the drills in Unit 11 of the text book after a review of Units 1-10. LATIN III: Vergil’s Aeneid

The greatest literary masterpiece of ancient Rome has a genius, charm and pathos that reward careful study. Some knowledge of Latin is required, but the discussion will include sidetracks into Roman culture and the poem’s impact on art, Christian history and the modern world. The textbook is Vergil’s Aeneid Books I – VI ed. Clyde Pharr. Biblical Greek Classes


The cost is $50.00 for the class. Students should obtain their own copy of the textbooks before class begins.

INTRODUCTORY GREEK (ACCELERATED)
Instructor: Richard Rodriguez


For the student with previous experience of the Greek language (ancient or modern) and/or substantial experience with another foreign language. The class will cover Introductory Classical Greek, which provides an excellent basis for Biblical Greek, and will focus on a detailed technical description of the grammar for the purpose of analyzing complex texts. The two textbooks are JACT Reading Greek: Text & Vocabulary, and JACT Reading Greek: Grammar & Exercises. Biblical Hebrew Classes


The cost is $50.00 for the class. Students may purchase a copy of the textbook for $50.00.

INTRODUCTORY BIBLICAL HEBREW

For the student with no previous knowledge of Hebrew. We will cover the Hebrew writing system and pronunciation, as well as basic vocabulary, punctuation, and word-formation.
